What are the Signs and Symptoms of an Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself outside of the uterus. It commonly occurs in the fallopian tubes, but it can happen throughout the reproductive system and abdominal cavity. There is no way of telling how many ectopic pregnancies actually happen because in many cases, the fertilized egg is absorbed by the body. There are no symptoms and a woman may never even know she is pregnant unless she has been testing for pregnancy hormones. However, in some cases, ectopic pregnancies create health issues and cause pain.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy are abdominal pain, vaginal bleeding or spotting, and the absence of a menstrual period. A woman may think she is pregnant and make a visit to the doctor or she may not anticipate pregnancy and schedule an appointment based on the pain and bleeding. Other common symptoms include nausea and breast tenderness.

Usually the pain is not present until the ectopic pregnancy has caused bleeding or has ruptured. Severe internal bleeding can cause pain even if there is no rupture. It should be noted that these symptoms can also be a sign of other medical issues, including miscarriage.

Most symptoms of ectopic pregnancy appear within six to eight weeks after the last menstrual period. If a woman is trying to get pregnant, she would likely visit her doctor to confirm her pregnancy after her missed period. If she took a pregnancy test at home, it would have produced positive results because ectopic pregnancies can trigger hormones related to pregnancy. Your body reads the pregnancy as it would normally, even though it is not viable and cannot develop outside of the uterus.

Emotional Issues

The emotional issues associated with an ectopic pregnancy can be difficult to cope with. Conception has occurred, despite its inability to develop outside of the uterus. If ectopic pregnancies occur more than once and a woman is concerned about fertility, it can lead to feelings of depression. Ectopic pregnancies are similar to miscarriages in that an egg is fertilized, but full-term pregnancy does not occur. If you have experienced one of more ectopic pregnancies and you are feeling upset, frustrated, or depressed, speak with your doctor. He or she can recommend emotional support for women experiencing fertility problems.
