The Risks of Hormonal Methods of Birth Control
No matter what type of birth control used, except perhaps abstinence, there are risks posed for the woman using them. Altering hormonal levels in the body through unnatural means has been said to be more harmful than not. However, there are those who use hormonal birth control methods that have no ill effects. It is good to have information on some of these methods of birth control that can cause problems.

Different Birth Control Methods
Four different categories of birth control could be outlined. These are:
1. Abstinence
2. Barrier Methods of Birth Control
3. Hormonal Methods of Birth Control
4. Sterilization
With abstinence, a person would not have any sexual intercourse at all. This would be the safest method of birth control, but, of course, is not particularly desirable to a healthy woman.
The barrier methods include the female condom, a sponge, cervical cap and spermicides. These block the sperm from reaching the egg.

Hormonal methods of birth control include the pill, a birth control shot, the patch and the IUD. Also in this category is the vaginal ring.
Sterilization is a permanent method of birth control where the woman would no longer be able to have children.
General Risks Involved with Hormonal Birth Control Methods
Perhaps the greatest risks associated with birth control methods come from the hormonal methods. Because each woman’s body can react differently when hormones are introduced, it is hard to say that every woman would have problems. In fact, every woman does not have bad side-effects.

It is known that when a woman has birth control shots for two years or more, she may experience bone loss. After she stops getting the shots when bone loss has occurred, it does not always reverse itself. These shots are also known to cause a slight weight gain and often irregular spotting. According to some studies, the “good” cholesterol levels may decrease with the use of birth control shots.
Another example of some general risks existing with hormonal birth control is with the Mirena IUD. It can reduce menstrual bleeding or even stop it altogether, which is not how the body is meant to operate. When a woman has this type of IUD implanted into the uterus, she may experience light bleeding or spotting.
More Serious Risks with Hormonal Birth Control
Some serious risks can develop with some methods of hormonal birth control. An example with the birth control pill has been in the news time and time again. The pill has been linked to blood clots and strokes. Women who smoke and take the pill have a greater chance of vascular problems.
The hormonal IUD has been shown to produce some disastrous effects for some women. Some of the risks from using a hormonal IUD are:
• Perforation of the uterus or cervix
• Abscesses
• Sepsis (system-wide infection)
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Ectopic pregnancy
Before deciding on what method of birth control is the best, a woman would do well to do some thorough research to see all the advantages and disadvantages of the different kinds of birth control.
