Laparoscopy is a surgery where the operation is performed through small incisions within the abdomen. A tiny camera is used to see inside so any condition of the pelvic organs can be diagnosed and treated. The word comes from the Ancient Greek words lapara (which means flank or side) and skopeó (which means to see).

Why Laparoscopy is Used

There are a number of reasons a doctor would need to see inside the abdomen. He may want to see if there is any damage to the organs in the area after some accident or injury. With women, he can look to see if there is any inflammation of the reproductive organs, such as with pelvic inflammatory disease, or to find other infections. If a woman has pelvic pain, he can look inside to determine the cause.

How it Works

Laparoscopy surgery makes use of a small and thin tube that is lighted and placed within an incision in the abdomen. The surgery is generally done by a gynecologist or surgeon with the use of spinal or general anesthesia.

Prior to receiving surgery the patient will need to empty her bladder and get any fluids or medicines through an IV. If the person is nervous he or she may be given a sedative.

The procedure normally follows this sequence:

1.    If general anesthesia is used, an apparatus will be placed in the throat to help breathing
2.    Sometimes a catheter is used to drain urine
3.    Pubic hair will be shaved
4.    Surgical soap will be used to wash the pelvic area and belly
5.    For operations on women, an instrument (thin tube) is inserted into through the vagina which moves the uterus and ovaries to permit better access
6.    An incision (or more if other instruments are used) is made in the abdomen
7.    A needle is placed through the incision to inflate the abdomen with gas
8.    The laparoscope is placed through the incision to look at organs
9.    Sometimes tissues samples are taken
10.    Tools are removed and gas released and incisions closed and bandaged

The operation takes about a half hour to 90 minutes but can take longer depending on what is found. The patient can normally return to routine activities by the following day.
