Ovarian Cysts
A cyst is a small sac, filled with fluid and with an outer membrane. It also can contain air and other material. Ovaries are part of the reproductive system of a woman, located at the top of the fallopian tubes which run into the uterus. They are about the size of an almond and release the eggs to allow them to be fertilized. Cysts can form on an ovary and are thus called ovarian cysts.
Ovarian cysts are not uncommon and most women have them at some time. Usually these growths are not harmful in any way and many just disappear on their own accord without any treatment.

Types of Ovarian Cysts
One kind of ovarian cyst which is quite common is the functional cyst. Normal ovaries have little structures called follicles which are very like cysts in shape and size. Sometimes one of these continues to grow when it:
1. Fails to release an egg and instead retains it and turns into a cyst
2. Releases the egg but then fails to seal off, accumulates fluid and grows
The second cyst as described above can also come from the use of fertility drugs. This kind of cyst does not endanger any pregnancy. The functional cyst is not painful and is usually harmless. It often disappears after two or three months.

Other types of cysts include:
• The dermoid cyst, which is a cyst containing hair, teeth or skin because they are formed from the same cells that produce human eggs.
• A cystadenomas cyst which is a cyst that grows from ovarian tissue and is filled with a mucus or liquid.
• An endometriomas cyst, formed from a condition where uterine cells grow outside of the uterus. It can form on an ovary.
Some of these latter types of cysts can grow fairly large and thus cause the ovary to move out of its normal position. This can cause some pain in the abdomen.
Hormonal IUD and Cysts
Hormonal IUDs can cause ovarian cysts to form. These cysts, like all the ones outlined above, are not cancerous. Cysts caused from hormonal IUDs most often just disappear on their own. However, the hormonal intrauterine devices have other side effects such as mood swings, tenderness of the breasts and headaches.

Ruptured Ovarian Cysts
The most serious problem that can come from ovarian cysts is when they rupture. This is when a woman will notice real side effects, such as a sudden and severe abdominal pain, fever or vomiting. These symptoms and any signs of shock should be treated as an emergency. Signs of shock include rapid breathing, cold and clammy skin and lightheadedness.
