How Do I Care for My IUD?
IUDs are one of the world’s most popular forms of birth control because they require so little effort from the user. This also makes them more effective. There are many birth control methods that work extremely well, but if women do not use them properly, they fail. For instance, the birth control pill is typically a reliable method, but if a woman forgets to take just one pill, it can result in an unintended pregnancy. Since the IUD requires the user to do so little in terms of maintenance, it is one of the most effective temporary methods of birth control available.

How IUDs Work
An IUD is a device inserted into the uterus. It releases either copper or the hormone progestin, both of which interfere with pregnancy. The release of these chemicals happens automatically once the IUD is in place, so nothing is required of the user. The process continues to occur for the life of the IUD, preventing pregnancy for anywhere from five to 10 years after the IUD is inserted. Once it is removed, most women find they are able to get pregnant within a few months.

IUD Maintenance
The care of an IUD is easy. All that is required of the user is to check the string periodically to ensure the device is still in place. Some recommendations are for checking the string at least once per month, but others suggest it is a good idea to do it about once a week. Since the majority of pregnancies that occur with IUD use are caused by a shifting or expelling of the device, it is probably better to check it as often as possible, just to be safe.

Your doctor will show you how to check your IUD after it has been inserted, but the process is fairly easy. Squat or lift a leg onto a chair of the toilet. Insert a finger into the vagina until you feel the string from the IUD. If you reach the cervix and you are unable to feel the string, contact your doctor immediately. The same is true if the string feels longer or you are able to feel any part of the IUD other than the string. All of these things indicate there has been a shift in the device and it may no longer be effective.
Aside from this quick task, the IUD requires nothing from a user. It will continue to provide reliable birth control as long as it is in place.
