IUDs and What They Are
An IUD is a form of birth control. These intrauterine devices are shaped like a “T” and are inserted into the uterus to prevent conception. This reversible form of birth control is reported to be effective and trouble-free. Made of polyethylene, they apparently stop the sperm from traveling to and penetrating the egg. In fact, doctors are not sure exactly how they work. They may prevent the egg from traveling to the uterus or from the embryo getting implanted into the uterine wall. But no matter how they work, the effectiveness is reported to be 95 to 99%.

There are two types of IUD on the market in the U.S. One releases copper into the system and one releases hormones (progesterone). Neither type protects against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) but is only meant to prevent pregnancy.
Preventing Unwanted Pregnancy
With about 3 million pregnancies each year, it is estimated that 50% of them are unintended. Half of those are because contraceptive methods failed. There are approximately 1.2 million abortions performed each year. A woman who has experienced an unintentional pregnancy and goes ahead and has the child often has financial or personal burdens. There can also be negative effects on her health and that of the newborn.

Failure rates vary for each type of birth control used. For oral contraceptive pills, the failure rate is about 9%. It is higher for teens, ranging around 13%. The reasons may be that the pill must be taken daily, and sometimes the woman forgets to do so. Even so, the failure rates are determined with the concept that a woman takes each pill on time.
The IUD has a much lower failure rate, as it is a long-acting method that does not rely on the woman to do anything. Reportedly, the intrauterine device has a failure rate of less than 1%, which makes it a good choice for preventing unwanted pregnancy.

Benefits of Intrauterine Devices
Of course, due to the high success in preventing unintended pregnancy, IUDs are considered beneficial for those who do not want to get pregnant. These devices, once implanted, last for five to ten years (depending on which type the woman receives) and can also be removed immediately if the woman changes her mind or has any negative side-effects.
Risks with IUD Use
There are risks with using an intrauterine device. Some of the risks are:
• Increased menstrual bleeding
• Cramps
• Pelvic inflammation
• Loss of fertility
• Infection from sexually transmitted diseases
• Damage to the uterus or fallopian tubes
• Ectopic pregnancy
• Perforated uterus
Although serious complications are rare, there are women who have noticed worrying symptoms after receiving an intrauterine device. When this is the case, she should always consult her doctor. The device can be removed.
