The Risks of Laparoscopy
As with any surgery, there are always some risks that go along with the procedure. There has never been a completely risk-free operation as complications can occur with any surgery. Laparoscopy presents its own unique risks, and although uncommon, a woman should be aware of them. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a strong immune system is the best way to prevent troubles with any surgery.

The Risks with Laparoscopy Surgery
There are few risks with laparoscopy. However, some that can occur are:
• Infection from the wound
• Bleeding or bruising from the incisions
• Blood transfusion required
• Accidental damage to pelvic organs
• Further surgeries for additional organ repair
If general anesthesia is administered to the patient, there are risks involved with this, however the risks are extremely low and a generally healthy person should have no problems.

Accidental damage done during surgery to the pelvic organs or blood vessels affects only about one or two people for every thousand patients. This is a low risk to those receiving laparoscopy procedures.
Serious risks only affect approximately two patients in every 1,000. These are:
• Severe damage to bladder, uterus, bowel or blood vessels
• Hernia at wound site
• Death (very rare – only three to eight patients in every 100,000)
Those Who Cannot Receive Laparoscopy
There are some women who cannot have a laparoscopy because the chances they may have problems are too high. Those with abdominal hernia or cancer should not have this procedure. Those who have had other abdominal surgeries in the past may not be qualified to receive laparoscopy.

After Surgery Discomforts and Problems
Once the surgery has been performed, a woman may have some discomforts which are natural. There may be some bloating. Bruising around the area of the incisions is common. There may also be some pain. The gas used to inflate the abdomen may cause discomfort for a few days and because it irritates the diaphragm, the woman may feel an achiness or even pain in her shoulder. Sometimes the gas leaks into the skin and when the woman rubs the skin around the stitches she may hear a crackling sound. This is normal. It will go away shortly.
If after surgery the patient has a large area of swelling or redness around the incisions, she should call her doctor. She should also make that call if there is bleeding or any drainage from the stitches or if she runs a fever. Pain in the belly would be a sign that something is amiss. If the woman’s voice is hoarse and it lasts more than a few days or seems to get worse, she should contact her doctor and let him know.
