Any medical device designed to be inserted in the human body for long periods of time is rigorously tested for safety. Still, such products aren’t always danger-free. The ParaGard IUD, a form of effective long-lasting birth control, works well for some patients but must come with some warnings about potentially serious complications.
Some side effects of the ParaGard aren’t especially serious. The device can make periods and menstrual cramping heavier, for instance. But if the device starts moving around out of the area it’s placed in, problems can become serious.
If IUD begins to dig into the tissue of the uterus, it can become stuck and be difficult to remove. This can necessitate an ultrasound to find it, and a more complicated removal process involving clamps. (Removing an IUD the patient no longer wants is typically a simple outpatient process.)

If the IUD continues to dig its way into the uterine wall, the danger gets worse. It can completely perforate the uterus and eventually make its way into other areas of the abdomen, such as the intestines.
This process damages the uterus. It can cause pain, excessive bleeding and other symptoms. By damaging the uterus, it can also harm the patient’s long-term fertility. If it makes its way into other organs, it can damage them as well.
An IUD that has perforated the uterus requires surgery to remove, as well as to address tissue damage and scarring it caused.

If the IUD leaves the uterus, it no longer provides pregnancy protection; this can result in an ectopic pregnancy, in which a fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube. As the embryo grows, it can rupture the tube, causing severe problems.
These complications are rare, and something only a small fraction of IUD users will experience. But for those who do have them, the can require one or more surgeries and result in scar tissue that creates lifelong effects. This is particularly tragic when uterine damage causes infertility. Patients should be aware of all potential downsides of the birth control method they choose, including rare worst-case scenarios.

Anyone with a ParaGard IUD should be alert for unusual pelvic or abdominal pain, bleeding or other unexplained symptoms. They should also check their strings occasionally to make sure they can still be felt, since disappearance of the strings can be a sign that the device has migrated from the proper location.
Victims of these problems in recent years have sued Teva and CooperSurgical, the maker of Paragard, alleging that the device was faulty and that the manufacturer concealed potential dangers. Teva has already settle with some plaintiffs, and as the popularity of IUDs continues to grow, such suits will likely continue.
