Choosing the right contraception is a complex decision that includes age, lifestyle, preferences around your sex life, plans for future children, medical history and more. The choice of whether to get an IUD, and which one, is thus a personal one as well.
Five IUDs are currently available on the US market: the ParaGard copper IUD and five hormonal IUDs, the Mirena, Kyleena, Liletta and Skyla. Here are some factors to consider in choosing among them.

Materials
If you don’t want to put any artificial hormones inside your body, choose the hormone-free ParaGard. If you’re okay with the idea of a hormonal IUD but want to keep the dose as low as possible, choose the Kyleena or Skyla (they use slightly less hormone). If you’re allergic to copper, you’re not a good candidate for the ParaGard and should choose one of the hormonal options.
Length of effectiveness
The ParaGard remains effective for 10 to 12 years, while the hormonal options all remain effective for 5 to 7 years (they’re approved for slightly longer use in countries outside the US). All are long-lasting, but if you have many fertile years ahead of you and expect to never have children, this may be a reason to prefer the ParaGard.

Menstrual bleeding
ParaGard’s most common symptoms are an increase in bleeding and menstrual cramping. On the other hand, the hormonal IUDs all decrease period bleeding, sometimes to the extent of stopping it altogether. If you already have heavy periods and can’t tolerate the idea of them getting worse—or are strongly motivated to reduce them—choose any hormonal IUD. On the other hand, getting your period can be a reassuring reminder that you’re not pregnant. If the idea of stopping your period makes you anxious, choose ParaGard.
Cost
IUDs are typically covered by insurance. If you’re uninsured, all but one cost about $1000 to $1300. The Liletta is made by a nonprofit healthcare company with the goal that it will never cost anyone more than $150. If cost is a factor, choose Liletta, or find a community clinic that provides free birth control.

Size
If a health caregiver has told you your uterus is smaller than normal, you may want to choose the Kyleena or Skyla. Both are marketed as good choices for childless women and are slightly smaller than the other option.
Current and future family
Whether you’ve had children, are planning future children or none of the above, you can choose among the existing options. All are appropriate for patients who have never given birth, and are completely reversible once removed.
