Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Pelvic inflammatory disease has such dire consequences that it is important for women to be aware of any symptoms and thus be able to seek treatment. Pelvic inflammatory disease in some form affects about a million women a year, and approximately 100,000 of them end up infertile. Recognizing symptoms will put a woman more in control of her body and allow her to get to a doctor and begin treatment.

The Symptoms of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease or PID
Symptoms of this disease can vary. PID may produce no outward signs or it may show up with severe symptoms. Illness could be evident. Serious damage can be done to a woman’s reproductive organs and she may not even know she has PID as the symptoms can be very mild with some forms of infection. Mild symptoms can and most often do include lower abdominal pain. Thus when a woman experiences this, she should get an examination by her doctor.

• Foul odor of vaginal discharge
• Irregular menstrual bleeding
• Nausea
• Painful urination
• Tenderness or a dull pain in stomach
• Fever (100 degrees F or higher)
• Painful intercourse
More Severe Signs of PID
The signs that it is time to contact a doctor or go to an emergency room are the following:
• Pain is lower abdomen is severe
• Vomiting
• Fainting or other signs of shock
• Temperature higher than 101 F
Whether signs and symptoms are severe or not, a woman should refrain from further sexual intercourse until she sees a doctor and gets a proper diagnosis.
If gonorrhea is the infection causing pelvic inflammatory disease, symptoms can come on very fast. The woman would have fever with extreme pain. This is a situation which requires fast medical attention.

Diagnosing PID
A woman, who suspects she has PID and when visiting a doctor, should always give the doctor her full medical history. An honest account of sexual partners is important. The doctor will perform a physical exam, watching for abnormal vaginal discharge, tenderness in the pelvic region, and lumps around ovaries and fallopian tubes. He may want to run tests for HIV and syphilis. He may do a urinalysis to check for urinary tract infection.
There are a number of tests he may perform to check reproductive organs and their condition, including an ultrasound, a uterine biopsy or a laparoscopy procedure. These tests will reveal if PID is a problem and what the treatment should be.
