Risks Associated with IUDs
Many women feel that intrauterine devices are the best bet when trying to avoid pregnancy. The reported failure rate of IUDs is extremely low. These devices, once inserted into the uterus, prevent conception by damaging or destroying the sperm. They are shaped in the form of a “T” and are inserted into the uterus. The insertion only takes a few minutes and can be done in a doctor’s office. There are two types of IUDs and risks exist with both kinds.
The Two Types of IUDs
There are two types of IUD:
• Hormonal
• Copper

The hormonal IUD releases a form of progestin, a hormone in the human body. It is said to be more effective at preventing conception than the copper intrauterine device. In the U.S., the hormonal IUD available is manufactured by Bayer. It is called Mirena and is approved for up to five years of use. Fertilization is prevented because the cervix mucus becomes thick and sticky so that the sperm cannot make it to the uterus. The lining of the uterus also becomes thicker due to the hormone released, thus any fertilized egg cannot attach and grow.
The copper IUD made in the U.S. is called ParaGard and has copper wire that winds around the stem. It releases small amounts of copper which is toxic to the sperm. It also creates an environment where the uterus and fallopian tubes secrete a fluid which kills sperm. This type of intrauterine device can be worn for up to ten years.

• Menstrual bleeding
• Cramping
• Hormonal side effects (with hormonal IUDs)
• Spotting between periods
• Uterine perforation
• Ovarian cysts
• Pelvic inflammatory disease

Symptoms of Problems with an IUD
Anyone with an intrauterine device should be alert to the warning signs of a problem related to the device. Anytime symptoms appear, the woman should make an appointment as soon as possible to see her doctor.

When to call the doctor:
• Finding the string (coming from the device in the uterus) is shorter or longer than usual
• Cannot find the string at all
• Severe bleeding from the vagina
• Passing clots of blood from vagina
• Blood soaking through pads or tampons every hour for two hours or more
• Foul smelling vaginal discharge
• Severe pain in stomach or pelvic area
• Fever and chills
It is always best to call a doctor, even if the woman is uncertain as to the cause. The real cause can be found once a proper physical exam is done.
