Types of IUDs
An IUD, or Intrauterine Device, is a popular method of birth control. This birth control device (which looks like a T) is inserted into the uterus by your physician. At the bottom of the IUD is a plastic string that hangs through the cervix and into the vagina. This string is a means for your physician to remove the device when needed but also serves as a way for you or your physician to check that it is still in place. You will be able to choose from two kinds of IUDs, copper and hormonal.

Copper IUD
The copper-based IUD contains no hormones and is the most popular type of IUD. The arms and/or the post of the device are wrapped in copper wire. The copper in the IUD causes the fallopian tubes and uterus to make a fluid that is toxic to sperm, killing them. This type of IUD can remain in your uterus up to 10 years but can be removed by the physician at any time the woman wishes.
This IUD is a good option for those looking to avoid hormones due to past reactions to hormonal birth control or concern over side effects of these hormones, such as lowered sex drive.

Hormonal IUD
This type of IUD releases a consistent amount of a hormone called progestin, a synthetic form of progesterone. The hormonal IUD works by killing and damaging sperm as well as making the uterine lining too thick for a fertilized egg to implant. Finally, it thickens the cervical mucous to prevent sperm from entering into the uterus. This IUD is approved for use for up to 5 years in the United States and up to 7 years in Asia and Europe. Like the copper IUD, your physician can remove the device prior to that time as desired.

Hormonal IUDs can be a good choice for those women suffering painful menstrual periods as the hormones released can ease the cramping and lighten periods.
Placement
Both types of IUD will be inserted during an office visit with your physician. You can get an IUD at any point during your menstrual cycle but the ideal time is immediately after your menstrual period has ended.
Which is Right for You?
It is best to make an appointment with your physician to discuss what your menstrual cycle is like and how it effects you and what benefits you hope to gain from the IUD. You will also want to discuss the potential risks along with the benefits of each to determine which type of IUD will best meet your needs.
