Effectiveness of Long-Acting Contraception
Long-acting reversible contraception is a way to achieve long-term birth control for a woman, while at the same time not requiring any action on her part. A short doctor’s visit would end with an intrauterine device inside the woman’s uterus and she would have to do nothing else. She could immediately resume normal activities and yet be protected against unwanted pregnancy.

Reversible and long-acting contraception also includes the use of birth control implants which deliver hormones into the body and prevent pregnancy. Both the IUD and the subdermal implants have been known for their effectiveness as the wearer can’t “forget to take a pill” or “forget to use a condom.”
Adolescent Birth Control
There are almost one million teen pregnancies each year in the United States. There is quite an impact on teens, their families and society from these unplanned pregnancies. Although there are a number of methods of birth control that can be used by a teen, long-acting reversible contraception has been recommended in order to reduce the teen pregnancy rate.

This idea is controversial since it seems to deliver the message that it is okay for teens to have sex. There are other methods that would likely be best – and ones that would protect the young person against sexually transmitted infections. Of course, the best birth control for an unmarried teenager would be abstinence.
Scientific Studies on Long-Acting Reversible Contraception
The New England Journal of Medicine ran a study from 2007 to 2011 with participants who ran the risk of having an unwanted pregnancy. Those enrolled in the study were between 14 and 45 years of age, chose their preferred contraceptive method and receive it at no cost to them. Each person enrolled was sexually active or was expecting to be sexually active within the next six months.
Those who were using oral contraceptive pills, a vaginal ring or the patch had a higher failure rate than those who used birth control shots, IUDs or birth control implants. Those participants in the study who were younger than 21 years had twice the risk of unintended pregnancy as older women. The findings were supported by previous studies of the same birth control method effectiveness. Generally it is estimated that 9 percent of women who use oral contraceptive pills will have an unwanted pregnancy in the first year of use, while women who use IUDs or birth control implants come out as between .0001 and 0.7 percent.

Why Women Stop Using IUDs
Unfortunately, some women stop using IUDs when they begin to have unpleasant side-effects from their use. For example, some women experience menstrual problems, such as bleeding or cramping, while some stop having periods altogether. This can be distressing. There have been reports of IUD wear resulting in pelvic inflammations and even perforation of the uterus. Any woman considering this type of long-acting reversible contraception should carefully investigate the pros and cons of using an IUD or any hormonal birth control.
