The Dangers of IUD Use
An IUD is an intrauterine device which is placed within the uterus for birth control. The device is shaped like a “T” with a string that hangs down into the vagina. This is a one-time insertion for a five to ten-year period of birth control, only requiring regular checkups with a physician. Birth control is accomplished one of two ways – by hormones released from the device that prevent pregnancy or by the release of copper particles which are known to be poisonous to sperm.

There are two types of IUDs sold in the United States. One is the Mirena which is a hormonal IUD. The other is the ParaGard, a copper IUD. Both reportedly have very low failure rates; however there are dangers inherent in using IUDs. A woman should be familiar with these before deciding intrauterine devices are the right birth control for her.
Disadvantages and Dangers of IUDs
There are disadvantages to IUDs that could sway a person from choosing this particular type of birth control. For instance, the cost of the device and the insertion ranges from $500 to $1,000. This upfront cost can discourage many women from going ahead with intrauterine devices as a way to prevent pregnancy. Insurance plans may work to offset the cost, but an additional factor that dissuades many women is the fact that it hurts when it is inserted. Some experience continued cramping after insertion.

The dangers of using IUDs have been often published. If a woman catches a sexually transmitted disease while wearing one, the resulting infection can cause infertility and other problems with the reproductive tract. IUDs do not prevent the transmission of sexual infections.
Other dangers related to IUDs include:
• Perforation of the uterus or cervix
• Embedment of the device in other pelvic organs
• Irregular periods (or no periods)
• Ovarian cysts
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Ectopic pregnancy
Additionally, the Mirena IUD releases levonorgestrel into the system. This chemical is not one that is normally found in the human body. This chemical can cause adverse side effects. The copper IUD, ParaGard, has been reported as causing heavy periods, unusual bleeding and cramping.

Other Kinds of Birth Control as an Option
There are many other options for birth control that a woman can choose. Some of the least dangerous are:
• Female condoms
• Cervical caps
• Spermicides
• Birth control sponge
The Beginnings of the IUD were Not So Successful
Although IUDs have been produced in some form since the early 1900s, the success has not been amazing. In fact, the whole concept of the use of the IUD for birth control was greatly damaged in the 1970s when one IUD called the Dalkon Shield injured thousands of women due to a poor design. The flaw allowed bacteria to travel up into the uterus, leading to birth defects in those who conceived while wearing one, miscarriage, infection, injury and death.
A woman would be wise to research the benefits and weigh them carefully against all the disadvantages and dangers when opting for an IUD for birth control.
