Warnings for Paragard IUD
While Paragard was one of the first IUDs to be sold in the US and it is still the only copper option approved by the FDA, it does come with some potential complications. In recent years, there has been a barrage of lawsuits filed against the manufacturer by women who have experienced severe health consequences caused by the Paragard IUD. Here are just a few of the warnings that are currently being issues about Paragard:
Paragard and Pregnancy
If a woman becomes pregnant while on Paragard, the device should be removed. The device increases the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, infection and even death.

Ectopic Pregnancy
Women who become pregnant on Paragard are at a higher risk for an ectopic pregnancy. This means that the fertilized egg embeds and grows outside of the uterus. Typical, the egg will settle into the fallopian tube. Unfortunately, the egg is unable to survive and this can cause severe pain, bleeding and organ damage. This is a life threatening condition and commonly requires surgery.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
Women are at the highest risk for PID within the first 20 days of insertion. The risk of PID is also increased if the patient is having sex with more than one person. If the infection is caught early, it can be treated with antibiotics. However, PID can escalate and cause more serious complications such as infertility, chronic pain and even death.

Embedded Devices
It is possible for the Paragard IUD to travel throughout the body and/or become embedded in the uterus. This can cause perforation of the uterine and cervix wall and damage other organs and tissue. Surgery will be required to remove the device and repair the damage. This condition can be fatal and may require multiple corrective surgeries.

Painful Insertion and Removal
Typically, patients aren’t given any painkillers during the insertion and removal process. Some doctors may use a numbing agent, but this isn’t necessarily standard practice. As a result, many women experience pain, cramping and bleeding after having Paragard inserted or removed. These symptoms can last for months.
Contraindications
Paragard comes with a list of contraindications. Women who use the product need to be in relatively good health, otherwise they are at risk of experiencing severe health consequences. Patients should double check with their doctor to make sure that they are a good candidate for Paragard before undergoing the insertion procedure.
