Natural Family Planning Birth Control
Natural methods of birth control are often preferred to mechanical means and do not use hormonal manipulation and have no side-effects. However, these methods require a woman and man both to have self-control, motivation and determination. Although inexpensive, these natural family planning methods may not be as effective unless the couple has considerable commitment.
The three main types of natural family planning birth control methods are:
• Symptoms-based birth control methods
• Calendar-based methods
• The breastfeeding (lactational amenorrhea) birth control method

All methods except the breastfeeding method are based on fertility. The woman’s egg is released from 12 to 16 days before her next menstrual period and survives 3 to 4 days. Male sperm lives from 2 to 5 days. Working with these time frames, a woman can work out when she is most fertile and avoid intercourse.
Symptoms-Based Birth Control Methods
Symptoms-based birth control uses two ways to establish fertile times:
• Basal body temperature – Basal body temperature can be difficult to use, because the temperature difference looked for is so small. A woman’s temperature will drop slightly approximately 12 to 24 hours prior to an egg being released, and the temperature will rise again after the egg is released.
• Cervical mucus – With this method, a woman inspects her cervical mucus and based on its consistency and color will be able to tell if the egg has been released from her ovary. She would refrain from sexual intercourse for the three or four days following the change in the mucus.

Calendar-Based Birth Control Methods
There is a calendar rhythm method to avoid conception, and this one relies upon the calendar to determine the woman’s fertility. The woman keeps a record of how long each menstrual cycle lasts, from the first day of her period in one month to the start of the next period in the next month. She should do this for eight to twelve cycles. Taking the shortest cycle, she takes the total number of days and subtracts 18 from the total number. That total gives the number to use. Counting that number of days from and including day one of the cycle, she marks an X on that day of the calendar. This is the first fertile day.
Next the woman needs to mark on the calendar his last fertile day. She takes the longest cycle and counts the number of days. Then she subtracts 11 from that total number of days. This total is the number she uses to count from and including the first day of the current cycle and marks it with an X on the calendar. She will then have the period of time between those two Xs as the times she is fertile and should avoid sexual intercourse. This will not work if all cycles are shorter than 27 days. This method used alone is about 80% effective.

Lactational Amenorrhea Birth Control Method
The lactational amenorrhea method of birth control is a way to avoid pregnancy based on the natural infertility that accompanies breastfeeding. This method can be used if the woman has not had her menstrual period return, if she breastfeeds her child on demand day and night without replacing a feeding with other foods or liquids, and if her baby is younger than six months old.
