Placement of the IUD and Care Right After
Your IUD needs to be inserted by a health care provider. This can either be a primary care physician, a gynecologist or a midwife. Depending on your medical history, your physician will determine if you are a good candidate for the IUD.
It is placed usually during your period by a small plastic tube that is inserted into your cervix. The IUD is placed into your uterus and about 1-2” of the string from the IUD will stay in your vagina. There is usually some cramping after it is inserted which can be treated with ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

For the first three months after placement, you should routinely check for your IUD string every 3 days. Checking for the string means you wash your hands thoroughly and squat down while inserting your index finger into your vagina. You will need to reach your cervix to find the string. Once you find the string, feel to be sure you cannot touch any of the hard plastic part of the IUD.
Long Term Usage of IUD
An IUD can be used anywhere from 5 years (Mirena) to 10 years (Paragard). Speak with your doctor about which one is right for you. Once your initial 3 months pass, you can check the string each month during your menstrual cycle so you can examine the IUD on a regular basis.

If you cannot locate the string, this means the IUD has either fallen out or is now either in your uterus or perforated your uterus. It is extremely important to report any problems with your IUD to your physician. IUDs that perforate the uterus can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease. Normal inspection of your IUD will reduce the risk of complications from your IUD since you will always know where it is and if it is in the proper place.
