Five Risks Associated with Ectopic Pregnancy
Ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg attaches outside of the uterus. The embryo is unable to develop properly and is either absorbed back into the body or grows until it ruptures. This can lead to a number of health problems for a woman, some of which could be serious or even fatal. Five of the risks associated with ectopic pregnancy include:

Internal Bleeding
There can be two causes of internal bleeding. The ectopic pregnancy could rupture or it could cause damage to the veins and tissue inside of the fallopian tubes. Internal bleeding can be painful and may require an operation. This is one of the most common symptoms associated with ectopic pregnancy.
Rupture
If left untreated an ectopic pregnancy can rupture. This occurs when the embryo continues to grow and is unable to develop as it would if it were a healthy pregnancy inside of the uterus. Rupture is very painful and can cause serious complications. Surgery may be required if a rupture occurs.

Scarring
Scarring may initially seem less serious than bleeding or rupture, but over time it can become a serious problem. A single ectopic pregnancy can cause scarring, but the worst scarring is seen when women experience repeated ectopic pregnancies. Since each occurrence increases the odds for future issues, this problem compounds. Scarring can also be painful, though women typically do not notice scarring from just a single ectopic pregnancy.
Fertility Problems
Fertility issues are most often caused by the scarring created by ectopic pregnancies. The more scar tissue develops the harder it is for the egg to travel through the fallopian tubes. The result is eggs get stuck and implant in the tube. Scarring and ectopic pregnancies create an unhealthy pregnancy cycle. The scarring increases the odds for this type of pregnancy and this type of pregnancy increases scarring.

Depression
Finally, ectopic pregnancy can be emotionally trying for a woman. This is especially true in cases where ectopic pregnancy occurs more than once. In addition to dealing with the trauma of a pregnancy that does not come to term, women must also face the fact that ectopic pregnancies can be a symptom of a chronic fertility issue. Not only do they signify difficulty getting pregnant, each ectopic pregnancy decreases the likelihood of future healthy pregnancies. There is treatment available, but some women find they feel depressed and hopeless in terms of ever having a healthy pregnancy.
