The Practice of Birth Control
According to ancient writings, birth control has been in use since at least 1850 B.C. There were many various and strange methods used to prevent pregnancy, including placing plugs of honey, gum and acacia in the vagina. Later a spermicide was used that was a combination of nuts, fruits and wool. Although we can’t be certain how successful these methods of birth control were, we do know that today the practice of birth control has scientifically improved with much less of a failure rate than ever before.

Birth Control Today
Today the individual woman has a number of options for birth control. Her ability to control whether or not she wants a child (and if she does – when) is important in today’s world, as women have their own goals and objectives in life. Sometimes the birth of a child may not fit into the current plans, or perhaps never will. Women have the right to choose whether or not to have a family.
With so many options to choose from, a woman can look at many factors in choosing her contraceptive methods. She will perhaps take into consideration its cost, safety and any risks involved.

The Main Methods of Birth Control in Use Today
In the United States, a wide variety of birth control methods are used. Here they are listed in brief:
• Complete abstinence (would still allow for oral or non-penetrative sex)
• Natural family planning (timing of sexual intercourse during non-fertile periods)
• Withdrawal method
• Condoms (male and female)
• Cervical caps
• Diaphragms
• Contraceptive sponge
• Oral birth control pills
• Birth control patches
• Vaginal rings
• Birth control shots
• Birth control implants
• Intrauterine devices (IUDs)
• Sterilization
• Emergency contraception
Some of these methods, such as the condom, also prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Some women use a combination of a condom and another method to add in this extra protection.

Effectiveness of Various Birth Control Methods
The chance of pregnancy varies widely with the different methods of birth control and typical use and within the first year. Using no birth control at all has an 85% chance of pregnancy. The withdrawal method gives a 27% chance of becoming pregnant with typical use. The female condom can result in a 21% chance of pregnancy. Next in line are the male condom and the progestin-only birth control pill with a 15% and 13% rate of pregnancy respectively. The birth control pill with a combination of hormones, the vaginal ring and the patch all show an 8% chance of becoming pregnant. The methods that release hormones into the system all are below 1% in the chance of conception during the first year of use.
