There are a lot of good things about birth control, but what about the common dangers of birth control options? Just like with any medical device or medication, they come with risks. Weighing the benefits and the risks can help you decide which one you would like to use. We will talk about several different types of birth control and their associated risks involved.
Hormonal Birth Control Options and Risks
There are several types of hormonal birth control options available today. They all involve the introduction of hormones systemically, which means it goes through your body to affect your fertility. Pills are taken orally, shots are administered, implants are placed, rings are put in place, IUDs are placed and patches are stuck to be sure we get the appropriate dosage of hormones.

Choosing the form you want depends on several factors. If you smoke and you are over 35, it is not recommended that you use the pill, patch, implant or shot because of the increased risk of stroke and blood clots. Some pills also come with the possibility of an associated risk of increasing your chances of breast, cervical, ovarian or uterine cancer.
Recent studies have found ties with some cervical cancer patients that have an association with birth control use. The risk of cervical cancer is raised when you are taking the pills, using the NuvaRing, Mirena IUD, Implanon, Depo-Provera shot and the patch. Once you stop using the hormonal birth control, the risks decrease.
Mirena IUDs use hormones as well, but come with another associated risk. With an IUD, when it is placed it can very rarely result in uterine perforation. This means the IUD gets stuck in the uterine lining or even pushes all the way out of the uterus.

Non-Hormonal Birth Control Risks
Non-hormonal types of birth control carry risks for both the male and female. Of course, the number one risk is pregnancy when the birth control fails. Also, if a condom fails, you also risk the exposure to STDs as well. Latex and spermicides can cause allergic reactions in some people as well. Before committing to any type of birth control, speak with your doctor to discuss all the risks and benefits.
