Should You Remove Your IUD?

An IUD is an effective tool for preventing pregnancy. Many doctors recommend it to patients because it requires very little maintenance. IUDs also last a long time, so once it is inserted it can be left in place for several years. Unfortunately, not everyone has a positive experience with their IUD, but it is still one of the most popular options for birth control. If you have an IUD and you think it may need to be removed, consider the following:

Pain or Bleeding

Are you experiencing any pain or bleeding? If so, you may need to have your IUD removed. If either of these things occurs, contact your doctor immediately. It may be a minor problem, but it can also be serious. An IUD can shift inside of your uterus and puncture the tissue. It can also be expelled, especially during its first year of use. Though this may not be dangerous, it does make the IUD ineffective for preventing pregnancy.

Symptoms of Pregnancy

If you are experiencing any of the symptoms of pregnancy you may need to have your IUD removed. Obviously this is uncommon, but no method of birth control is fail-safe if a person is sexually active. If you experience pregnancy symptoms, contact your doctor. The hormonal IUD is known for causing menstruation to lighten or disappear, so you may experience pregnancy false alarms. However, you need to determine as soon as possible if your situation warrants removal of the device.

Fever

A fever could be a sign of an infection. There are myths surrounding IUD use and one of these is that IUDs increase a person’s risk for pelvic inflammatory disease. This is not directly true, but it is possible for an IUD to trigger an indirect infection. During the insertion, bacteria can be pushed into the cervix. If left untreated, an infection can lead to infertility and other serious health problems. Since it is easy to treat an infection it is better to be safe than sorry if you should develop a fever or any other symptoms associated with infection.

Ready to Get Pregnant

Finally, you should remove your IUD when you are ready to get pregnant. Your doctor will need to give you an exam and provide the “all clear” for trying to conceive. Some women report issues with conceiving after using an IUD, especially in the first few months. There is no definitive research showing that IUDs create infertility, so if you have concerns and plan to get pregnant in the future, speak with your doctor before choosing an IUD as your method of birth control.
