Can an IUD Cause Ectopic Pregnancy?

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg begins to grow and develop outside of the uterus. Most occur inside of the fallopian tubes, but can take place in the cervix, ovaries, or abdominal cavity. Ectopic pregnancy is a fairly common occurrence and happens in about one out of every 50 pregnancies. Ectopic pregnancy can be very painful and can result in serious health problems, especially if the situation causes a rupture in the reproductive organs.

The most common location for an ectopic pregnancy is the fallopian tubes. These are the tubes connected to the uterus that are about six inches long. They pick up eggs from the ovary and transport them into the womb. This is done through a series of squeezing movements that move the egg to its proper location. If the fallopian tube is damaged, it can block the movement and prevent an embryo from reaching its final destination.

Pelvic Infections and Ectopic Pregnancy

The most common cause of damage to the fallopian tubes is pelvic infection. These infections are usually caused by sexually transmitted diseases, but in some rare cases, women develop infections after the insertion or removal of their IUD. Bacteria are swept into the cervix during the process and can develop into an infection. These infections can destroy the lining of the fallopian tubes and serious infections can lead to scarring and blockage. Women who have experienced pelvic infections have five times the risk of suffering from ectopic pregnancies.

Endometriosis

In addition to pelvic infections, endometriosis can increase a woman’s risk for ectopic pregnancy. Endometriosis is a condition that causes uterine tissue to grow outside of the womb. This tissue attaches to other internal organs and can lead to scarring on the fallopian tubes. Any time the fallopian tubes are scarred, there is risk for blockage and an increased likelihood for ectopic pregnancy.

Unfortunately, using an IUD can increase the likelihood of ectopic pregnancies but they do so indirectly.  Though IUDs are not the cause of pelvic infections, using one can increase your risk. However, there is also evidence that using an IUD can reduce your risk for pelvic infection because it reduces your likelihood of getting pregnant in the first place. If you are prone to ectopic pregnancies, an IUD creates a barrier that prevents fertilization of the egg and implantation of an embryo. By interfering with conception, IUDs cut down on the likelihood that something could go wrong during the process.

If you have experienced an ectopic pregnancy, speak with your doctor about the benefits and risks associated with IUD use.
