Ectopic Pregnancy
When a pregnancy occurs outside of the uterus, it is called an ectopic pregnancy. These kinds of pregnancies happen approximately one time in every 40 to 100 pregnancies. Only one-third of the women who get an ectopic pregnancy will be able to have a baby later. In those who have had one ectopic pregnancy, one-third of these women have a risk of having another such pregnancy. It is a condition that must be diagnosed rapidly and treated. And it unfortunate that only in very rare cases will the baby survive.

Normal Pregnancy as Compared to the Ectopic
Normally, an egg begins its trip down from the ovary and through the fallopian tube, to become fertilized and finally come to rest in the uterine lining. Here it has room to grow and develop normally for the next nine months. However, in approximately one out of fifty pregnancies, the egg is fertilized and does not make it to the uterus but lodges in the wall of one fallopian tube. Occasionally the egg will attach to an ovary, the cervix or to another organ.

Complications of an Ectopic Pregnancy
It is very rare that an ectopic pregnancy will result with a full term delivery at any point in the future. An egg which has implanted itself in the fallopian tube or in another location other than the uterus is not going to be able to grow properly. The fallopian tube is likely to rupture, creating life-threatening danger for the mother.
Hemorrhaging is the greatest danger of a tubal pregnancy. The growing tissue can actually destroy pelvic structures. If the condition is found early enough, measures can be taken to not only prevent maternal mortality, but even allow for successful pregnancy in the future. Of course, having a successful pregnancy after a woman has experienced an ectopic pregnancy will depend on her age, if she has already had other children and the reason the ectopic pregnancy occurred.

Causes of an Ectopic Pregnancy
The reasons an egg will lodge outside of the uterus is most often due to some condition which blocks or slows the movement of the fertilized egg. It can be because of a defect in the fallopian tubes that has been there since birth. It can be due to complications from a ruptured appendix. If a woman has had an ectopic pregnancy previously, her chances of another are greater. Scarring can slow the movement of the egg and cause it to lodge in the fallopian tube. This scarring can be the result of infections or prior surgeries. Endometriosis is a disorder which can also cause ectopic pregnancy. This is where the cells from the lining of the uterus appear in other areas of the body and are able to grow there.
Whenever a woman has any symptoms of an ectopic pregnancy (pain in the pelvis, vaginal bleeding, mild cramping on one side, periods stopping), she should make an appointment with her doctor to get checked right away.
