Can Using an IUD Affect My Fertility?
Many women across the world worry about the use of IUDs and their fertility after removal. As with all forms of birth control, one must consider what their long or short term family plan. Although all forms of contraceptives prevent pregnancies, some are better suited for long term use. This longevity raises concerns about how long these drugs last in the system after removal.

How Does IUD Usage Affect Fertility?
IUDs allow a woman to return to fertility within a cycle, with most women becoming fertile in around five days. Most specialists agree that both hormonal and copper IUDs do not lead to an increased risk of infertility. One of the biggest misconceptions of IUDs and infertility is due to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, a disease that was originally thought to be caused by IUDs. Recently PID as been linked to sexually transmitted diseases.

In the 1970s and early 1980s, science had not progressed far enough for doctors to determine that IUDs were not causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Women who were having unprotected sex with multiple partners were increasing their risk of getting sexually transmitted diseases. Once the sexually transmitted disease was present, it was found that the IUD could allow the disease to enter the cervix and therefore causing Pelvic Inflammatory Disease.
IUDs have not shown a significant increase in risk of infertility over any other form of birth control or without use. The hormones or copper ions present in IUDs are generally undetectable within 30 days of removal. It has been shown that during the first few weeks after insertion of an IUD the risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease is slightly higher due to the risk of moving an already present or new sexually transmitted disease into the cervix during insertion.

How Long Should You Wait After Your IUD is Removed?
Most doctors will recommend that you wait two to three months after your removal of your IUD to try and conceive. This method allows the uterine lining to come back to normal thickness and for the body to rid itself of any hormones or copper. It allows the body to come back to its natural state to be prepared for the fertilization of an egg. It is important to see your doctor if your cycle does not continue normally within 30 days of removal of your IUD. Until you have reached a few months, it is recommended that you use a barrier method to prevent conception such as condoms, male or female.
