Do IUDs Cause Hormonal Problems
Women who choose to use an IUD to prevent pregnancy have two options: They can use a device that releases copper into the system or they can choose one that releases the hormone progestin. Both block pregnancy and both are generally safe, but the latter can cause side effects related to hormonal imbalance.
There are several important things you should remember regarding your hormonal IUD. If you are in the process of making a choice concerning birth control or you are experiencing unexplained problems and you have recently undergone the insertion of a hormonal IUD, you could be affected. Consider the following before determining what action you want to take with your birth control:

Everyone is Different
There is limited scientific evidence confirming hormonal IUDs cause hormonal problems. However, there is plenty of anecdotal evidence, but you will have a tough time getting your doctor to confirm the problem is the IUD because medical studies are not available to back up the problems yet.
Incidences of problems vary from person to person a great deal. Some users experience symptoms so severe they are miserable. Others have only mild symptoms that may occur for just a few weeks or months while their bodies adjust and still others have no symptoms at all and love the IUD for birth control. Each person is different, so do not assume your reaction one way or the other.

Hormonal Problems Can be Serious
Chances are if you are having problems with a hormonal IUD, you have already heard from a few people that these problems are not “a big deal.” Since the side effects may not be permanently damaging your body, people will be quick to dismiss them. Do not let how other people feel deter you from finding a solution. If you are experiencing mood swings or you are tired or depressed because of the hormone fluctuations, you deserve to be taken seriously. It is a problem, despite not having any visible physical consequences.

The same is true for symptoms that may be physical, but still considered mild. Some hormonal IUD users report problems with weight gain, bloating, headaches, nausea, cramping, and back aches. Experiencing these symptoms occasionally is probably not going to create a long-term effect. Most people deal with one or more of these every once in awhile and it does not affect their quality of life. However, if the hormonal IUD is causing you to experience chronic symptoms like these, it is a serious problem.
If you are using the hormonal IUD and you are unhappy with the results, speak with your doctor about removing the device and choosing another method of birth control.
