Do IUDs Increase the Risk of Cancer?
Over the years, there has been some serious concern about increased risk of cancer among women who use hormonal IUDs as contraceptives. There is some evidence that certain cancers are more sensitive to hormones, which can potentially present problems for women who are taking hormones. While some studies have linked Mirena and other IUDs to cancer, there needs to be more research before doctors can reach conclusive results.

What we do know is that progesterone can play a role in the development of breast cancer. It would make sense then that Mirena, which releases levonorgestrel, the synthetic form of progesterone, would increase cancer risks. The FDA has released a warning that states: “Women who currently have or have had breast cancer, or suspect breast cancer, should not use hormonal contraception because some breast cancers are hormone-sensitive.” However, the FDA also acknowledges that many of the ties between cancer and Mirena are purely based on observations and anecdotal evidence.

Early studies conducted in 2005 and 2011 found that there was not an increased risk of breast cancer among women who were using Mirena. In 2014, another study conducted in Finland found that Mirena actually decreased the risk of other cancers including ovarian, pancreatic, endometrial and lung. However, the study did conclude that there was an increased risk of breast cancer.
Should You Use an IUD?
Additional studies have come to the same conclusions, but many have made the argument that the increase in risk for breast cancer is minimal and that the benefits of using Mirena far outweigh the risks. Some researchers have also recommended that women use IUDs with lower hormone levels or consider using Paragard, which does not use hormones. Instead, Paragard uses a copper wire to create a hostile environment for sperm and prevent fertilized eggs from attaching to the uterine wall.

A Call for More Research
As it stands now, there isn’t any clear evidence that using hormonal IUDs significantly increases the risk of breast cancer. However, the FDA and researchers aren’t ready to declare IUDs completely safe even though they have been prescribed to women for decades. A lack of evidence doesn’t necessarily imply that there isn’t a problem, which is why many are pushing for further studies with larger testing pools.
Women considering IUDs should understand that there are potential risks. While these may be worth the benefits, they need to make informed decision about their health.
