Copper IUDs – Benefits and Disadvantages
Copper IUDs or intrauterine devices are a method of birth control. The device is shaped in a T-shape with copper around its stem. Because copper is toxic to male sperm, the release of copper into the woman’s system prevents pregnancy. The IUD can remain in the uterus for ten years without replacement. There are both advantages and disadvantages to a copper IUD.

The Advantages or Benefits to a Copper IUD
Women feel that birth control methods that require no action on their part are a convenient and easy way of preventing pregnancy. Without the necessity of remembering to take a pill or use a spermicide, a woman will not have to have her attention on birth control. Living spontaneously can be important to a woman’s lifestyle. These intrauterine devices can remain in the womb for up to ten years, only requiring two things:
• Checking the string each month to ensure it is hanging from the uterus
• Regularly scheduled checkups by a doctor who will ascertain if the device is still in place
The copper IUD has a very low failure rate. Approximately only two out of one hundred women will conceive in the ten years this device is worn. It is also reversible. To get pregnant, the woman simply needs to see her doctor and have it removed.

Some of the other advantages include:
• Cheaper to use over time (although a high first-time expense)
• Can be used while a woman breastfeeds
• Can be used right after a baby is born or after an abortion
• Can try to get pregnant right away after it is removed
The Disadvantages of Using a Copper IUD

The side effects of the copper IUD are the greatest disadvantage to their use. Some women are allergic to the copper that is released into their bodies. It can cause a copper toxicity. There are other physical side effects such as:
• Increased bleeding from the uterus
• Abdominal pain
• Cramping
• Longer and heavier menstrual periods
There is no protection from sexually transmitted infections so if a woman has multiple partners, she will need to take other precautions, such as condom use. Additionally, some partners can feel the string of the IUD during intercourse. Another disadvantage (and the most serious perhaps) is that the IUD can move out of place and perforate the uterine wall or even migrate outside of the uterus and embed in other tissues.

Copper Toxicity
Copper toxicity refers to the body containing too much copper. Some are more sensitive to copper than others, but there have been studies showing that long-term exposure to copper can result in kidney and liver damage. Whether this would apply to the amounts of copper released from an IUD has not been studied. If someone has indications of copper poisoning, they should have the IUD removed.
