Hormonal IUD – Benefits and Disadvantages
Hormonal IUDs or intrauterine devices are methods of birth control that function by releasing hormonal substances into the uterine area. The IUD is formed in a T-shape which holds it within the uterus, and a string hangs down into the vagina so it can be removed when the time comes. They can stay in place for up to five years. The hormonal IUD that is available in the United States is manufactured by Bayer and is called the Mirena.

The substance released by the hormonal IUD is levonorgestrel, a synthetic form of the hormone progestin. This substance prevents fertilization of the egg because the mucus in the cervix becomes so thick that the sperm cannot reach the uterus or the egg. Also because the mucus in the uterus is also thick and the walls kept from growing thicker, if the egg does become fertilized, it is not able to attach to the uterine wall.
The Advantages or Benefits of a Hormonal IUD
Like any IUD, having a convenient birth control method which requires no constant attention is wonderful, in the opinion of many women. They do not need to remember to take a pill or do anything other than live spontaneously. These devices are approved to be used for up to five years without doing anything but checking the string every month and getting regular doctor checkups, to make sure the device has not moved.

The hormonal IUD, like the copper one, has an extremely low rate of failure. It is reported that less than one percent of the women who use hormonal IUDs will become pregnant in the first year of use. Also, when the hormonal IUD is removed, about eight out of 10 women will be able to get pregnant in the first year after the removal.
Other advantages are:
• The hormones reduce overall menstrual bleeding
• Cramping may be reduced
• It is reversible by simply removing the IUD from the uterus
• Relatively inexpensive in the long-term

Numerous side effects have been reported from hormonal intrauterine devices. These can include cramping, lower back pain, weight gain and vaginitis. Some other adverse side effects may be:
• Pain in the lower abdomen
• Headaches
• Skin problems including acne
• Lack of interest in sex
• Depression
• High blood pressure
When accidental pregnancy does occur, there is a higher danger of ectopic pregnancy, a condition where a fertilized egg lodges in the fallopian tube or some other pelvic region. This can be dangerous unless treated right away. Other conditions that have been associated with use of a hormonal IUD are:
• Irregular bleeding
• Ovarian cysts
• Pelvic inflammatory disease
• Abscesses
• Infertility
Organ Perforation from a Hormonal IUD
Any IUD, not just the hormonal type, can lead to perforation of pelvic organs. When an IUD moves from place, it can cut into the uterine wall. There are reports of IUDs moving outside of the uterus and becoming embedded in other tissues in the pelvic region. It can perforate intestines or the bladder.
