Risks of Using an IUD

An Intrauterine Device, or IUD, is one of the most effective and popular forms of birth control today. However, as with all forms of contraception there are risks to using the IUD. There are risks associated with both of the two types of IUD as well as specific risks for the individual types. Concerns
Sometime within twelve months of insertion, approximately 2 to 10 of every 100 women will discover their IUD has been expelled, or pushed out, from their uterus. This typically occurs within 90 days of the IUD being placed. The IUD is more likely to be pushed out when a woman has not been pregnant or when placed right after childbirth. Expulsion is also more likely if you have heavy or lengthy periods or are younger than 20 years old.

A rare risk is that of perforation of the uterus, which almost always occurs during insertion. The risk of perforation is 1 in 1,000. If the uterus is perforate, or the IUD becomes stuck in the uterus, the IUD must be removed.
