What Can Cause a Uterine Puncture?
Uterine punctures can be caused by a variety of things including a few routine medical procedures.  There are certain women who can be at a higher risk of a uterine puncture or perforation; this includes women who have had a C-section or abdominal surgery and woman who have been breastfeeding and now have undergone surgery.  Let’s look at exactly what a uterine puncture is and then at what some of the most common causes of a uterine puncture may be.

What is a Uterine Puncture?
A uterine puncture refers to the tearing of the uterus. This can result in fever, abdominal pain and heavy bleeding.  In most cases, a uterine puncture can be fixed by a surgeon with relative ease but if the puncture damages the intestines, a portion of the intestines may have to be removed to fix the damage.  Although this may require a long recovery period, the success rate of a uterine puncture repair is extremely high, with complications being very rare.

Causes of a Uterine Puncture
There are a few medical procedures that can cause a uterine puncture. Some of these include the birth of a child, the placement of an IUD and an abortion.  The most common cause of a uterine puncture is the turning of an infant during childbirth. The puncture or perforation is generally caused by a surgical instrument that is shaped like a scoop and is used to remove material from the uterus after the child has evacuated the birth canal.

There is also a chance of puncturing the uterus during the insertion of an IUD.  This is especially possible when a woman who is breastfeeding gets an IUD insertion. The walls of the uterus are thinner when a woman is breastfeeding, making it possible for the woman to have a uterine puncture during the insertion of an IUD.  If inserted incorrectly, the IUD could pierce the wall of the uterus, thus creating a uterine puncture or perforation.  This risk is generally only associated with women who have had past abdominal surgeries such as abortions, C-sections or any other cervical procedures.  If the uterus or cervix is damaged during prior surgeries, the tissue may be weakened and therefore more prone to tearing.

Testing for Uterine Punctures
Doctors can use a variety of methods to test for uterine punctures ranging from blood tests to x-rays. Ultrasounds are the most frequently used method to confirm a diagnosis of a uterine puncture.  Blood tests can show whether the body is fighting off an infection, and ultrasounds can show whether there is any air and/or blood in the abdominal cavity.  Laparoscopy, a fiber optic instrument, can also be inserted inside the body through a small incision and can diagnose a uterine puncture. Once the puncture is diagnosed, the treatment plan can be constructed and implemented.
