What is the Difference Between Copper IUDs and Hormonal IUDs?
There are two types of IUDs. Both look very similar and perform in a somewhat similar manner, but the active ingredient in each is different. The first type of IUD uses copper to prevent pregnancy. The second type releases the hormone progestin into the system. Health experts tend to disagree on the exact way these substances prevent pregnancy. Some believe they make the uterus inhospitable to fertilized eggs. Others tend to think the substances attack sperm as they enter the uterus. Still others believe it could be a combination of both of these actions that make IUDs effective.

In addition to the active ingredients that prevent pregnancy, IUDs also differ in the side effects they trigger. It is important to note that side effects vary from person to person. What one woman experiences could be very different fro what another IUD user experiences. It should also be noted that some of the side effects are opposite from one type of IUD to the other. Be sure you understand what specific type of IUD you have and what the “normal” side effects are so you can determine if you are experiencing a serious problem or something that is expected.

Copper IUDs
Copper IUDs release a small amount of copper into the body. They are a T-shaped device that is placed in the uterus for up to 10 years. Current research is underway to determine if the copper IUD can be effective and safe for up to 12 years or more.
The most common side effect associated with the copper IUD is cramping and heavy menstrual bleeding. For most women, the heavy bleeding eases over time with IUD use. If you experience heavy bleeding after the insertion of your copper IUD, speak with your doctor. The two of you can determine if you should wait it out to see if the bleeding eases or remove the IUD.
It is also possible to experience an allergic reaction to a copper IUD. If you are allergic to copper, your body will be unable to tolerate this type of IUD. If you notice pain, a skin rash or any other unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.

Hormonal IUDs
This type of IUD is also T-shaped. It can be used effectively for birth control for up to five years. The hormonal IUD is known for triggering more symptoms than the copper IUD, but there is less medical evidence confirming the link between these side effects and the device. Many women have reported cramping, bloating, headaches, breast tenderness, mood swings, back aches, and a variety of other symptoms associated with hormonal fluctuations. If you experience any of these symptoms, determine how severe you feel they are and speak with your doctor about future plans for your IUD use.
