Treatment for a Punctured Uterus
A uterine perforation is a cutting through of the uterine wall, a hole that is made in the wall by some medical device or surgical instrument. The causes are not that many – IUDs that move around inside the uterus and puncture the wall or instruments used in a D&C procedure, tubal ligation or the like. When a diagnosis of punctured uterus is confirmed, treatment must be begun. If surgery is needed, it should be done right away to prevent more dire consequences.

Treatment Based on Cause of Perforation and How Extensive
The physician will decide upon treatment depending on the cause of the perforation as well as how extensive the damage. If any indications exist of infection, antibiotics will be administered, particularly if there is an inflammation of the tissues lining the inner walls of the abdomen.
If the perforation occurred during an induced abortion, the doctor may wish to do surgery to repair the uterine wall. If an IUD caused the puncture, the intrauterine device will be removed and the doctor will do laparoscopy to examine the woman’s organs and the extent of the damage before performing additional surgery.

In some cases, it is not just the uterus that is perforated, but the bowel or bladder may also be involved and have been perforated. If this occurs, more extensive surgery will be needed to join together the bowel segments that were separated.
Laparoscopy for Repair of Perforation of Uterus
Laparoscopy is surgery that employs a very thin tube which is lighted. It is put through a small incision in the belly so the surgeon can examine the female pelvic organs. With this procedure, the doctor can get a good look inside and find any infection or “missing” IUD. He will be able to see the extent of any damage (or lack thereof) and decide at that point what to do. This type of surgery can often be done in one day without the need to stay overnight in the hospital.

IUDs Causing Perforation of the Uterus
IUDs have been known to cause a perforation of the uterus in some cases. The intrauterine device moves from place and the edges can cut through the uterine wall. Sometimes it can get lodged into the tissues. At other times the IUD may have moved outside of the uterus and also caused damage to the walls of other pelvic organs. The doctor must locate the device and get it out then repair any damage in the pelvic region.
