Birth Control Options
There are many options today when it comes to pregnancy prevention. Each type of birth control can have various levels of effectiveness, side effects, risks and benefits.
The Pill
A very well known and popular contraceptive option is the birth control pill. There are a few types of birth control pill available:
• The combination pill - contains progestin as well as estrogen
• The mini pill - only contains progestin
• Extended cycle pill - allows you to only have a period every three months

The IUD
A T-shaped device made of flexible plastic that is inserted by a physician. There are two variations of the IUD. One contains progestin in the base of the T and the other has copper wrapped around the arms and base.
The Ring
The only brand currently available is called the NuvaRing. It consists of a flexible plastic ring, containing both progestin and estrogen, that the patient inserts into her own vagina. It remains in place for 3 weeks and then removed for one full week to allow for a menstrual period.

The Patch
A hormone containing patch that can be adhered to the abdomen, arm or buttock. It contains both estrogen and progestin. The patch should be replaced every seven days.
The Diaphragm
Dome shaped and made of rubber, the diaphragm covers the cervix, preventing sperm from fertilizing an egg. It must be used in conjunction with spermicidal gel and be fitted by a doctor.
The Female Condom
Made of soft, polyurethane plastic and inserted into the vagina. It blocks the cervix, preventing sperm from entering and has the added benefit of protecting against STDs as well as pregnancy. You can insert the condom to eight hours prior to intercourse.

The Male Condom
Can be made of latex, polyurethane or lambskin. The lambskin does not offer full STD protection. The male condom prevents sperm from entering the vagina and uterus.

The Implant
The implant is a small, pliable rod made of plastic, similar in size to a matchstick. It is implanted just beneath the skin on your arm and can be left in place for a maximum of three years. It contains the hormone progestin.
Sterilization
There are three forms of permanent birth control, known as sterilization.
• Vasectomy
• Tubal ligation
• Essure
These types of procedures have been reversed but it is a difficult and expensive process that offers no guarantee of becoming pregnant.
Choosing a Form of Birth Control
The male and female condoms are the only contraceptive options that also protect against STDs. Precautions should be taken by those not in a mutually monogamous relationship.
Be sure to talk to your physician about the pros and cons of each of these options so you can determine what is perfect for you.
