Menstrual Cup Users are at Increased Risk of IUD Displacement
Both menstrual cups and IUDs have become increasingly popular products among women in recent years. However, it is important to note that using a menstrual cup does increase the risk that your IUD will become displaced. Once the IUD is displaced, it is less effective in preventing pregnancies. If you are using both products, it is important to be aware of the potential risks.

The link between menstrual cups and IUD displacement was first discovered in a study conducted by the Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network and headed by Dr. Jill Long. The study looked at 1,092 patients and was designed to last 3 years. During the first year, IUD patients came in for follow-up visits at the 6 week, 3 month and six month mark. At 9-months, there was such a high percentage of IUD displacement that the doctors began recommending that women should not use both IUDs and menstrual cups at the same time.

Recent Study Reveals Risks
As the study continued, the rate of displacement and total expulsion continued to rise. After 24 months, 17% of patients who were concurrently using IUDs and menstrual cups had experienced displacement. That is compared to a displacement rate of 5% among nonusers of menstrual cups.
Initially, the purpose of the study was not to look for relationships between menstrual cups and IUDs, but it quickly became clear that there was an increased risk of displacement that patients needed to be aware of. The findings will inform how doctors counsel their patients prompt further studies into this area of inquiry.

For women, it is important to learn how to detect displacement. This is something that the doctor can demonstrate and teach. At the same time, if you suspect a problem or you have been using both products for some period of time, don’t hesitate to set up an appointment with your doctor. There may be methods for removing the menstrual cup that reduces the risk of displacement or you may decide that discontinuing use of one or both products is in your best interest.
While both menstrual cups and IUDs are considered relatively safe, there are potential risks, especially if used in conjunction. It is important to weigh potential risks against benefits. In addition, you may want to keep up with updates as more studies are conducted, doctors this issue and release more recommendations that will keep patients safe.
