Removing Your IUD? What You Should Know

An IUD is a birth control device that is inserted into the uterus. It remains there for several years and triggers reactions in the body that make the uterus inhospitable to pregnancy. There are two different kinds of IUDs. One is made from plastic and releases the hormone progestin into the body. The other is a combination of plastic and copper, and releases small amounts of the copper into the body.

Both types of IUDs are inserted by a doctor. It is a fairly simple procedure and only takes a few minutes. The same is true for the removal process, which can take place anywhere from a few months to ten years after the insertion, depending on your personal needs and which type of IUD you choose.

There are certain things you should know about having your IUD removed. Though it can be removed at any time, there are things your doctor can do to make the process easier. Most doctors recommend removal during a woman’s period because the opening of the cervix is at its widest and softest. This makes it less painful, though it is possible to undergo a local anesthetic and most women report the removal process is slightly uncomfortable regardless of the timing.

Removal Process

The removal process begins with a pelvic exam in which the doctor locates the string attached to the device. He or she uses a clamp to grasp the string and slowly pulls it through the cervix. In order to ensure the removal goes smoothly and does not puncture any tissue on the way out, the device must be angled a certain way.

Complications

There are instances in which the cervix must be dilated to make removal possible. In some cases, the string cannot be located and an ultrasound is conducted to determine the angle and location of the IUD. IUDs can shift while in the uterus, which is why users are urged to check the string on a regular basis to ensure everything is still in place.

On occasion, the IUD will become embedded in the uterus. When this occurs, surgery becomes necessary to remove the device. This is rare, but it does happen in some cases. Regular checkups with your doctor can prevent this from happening.

Following the removal of the IUD, women may experience spotty bleeding. There could also be issues with hormone fluctuation as your body adjusts to its normal routine.
