What to Expect the Day You Get Your IUD

At the Doctor’s Office
One of the first things the office will ask you to do is take a pregnancy test. You cannot have an IUD inserted if you are pregnant. It is better to make your appointment when you are having your period so that the cervix will be more open and elongated. Good timing will make the procedure less painful and much quicker. The office will then follow up with a STD test, which can be done before the day of your IUD insertion, but may also be done at the office that same day. Once you have concluded with these tests, the doctor will then check for tenderness in your uterus in a fairly similar way to a gynecologist exam.
