What to Expect the Day You Get Your IUD
Anticipation of a medical procedure can cause elevated stress levels and concern. The effect can be even more pronounced when it is dealing with contraceptives and something you may not know a lot about. So first thing to do on the day of your IUD insertion is to read as much as possible about others’ experience with having an IUD inserted. Remember that it is a very short procedure and has most likely been done by your doctor hundreds, if not thousands, of times.

At the Doctor’s Office
One of the first things the office will ask you to do is take a pregnancy test. You cannot have an IUD inserted if you are pregnant. It is better to make your appointment when you are having your period so that the cervix will be more open and elongated. Good timing will make the procedure less painful and much quicker. The office will then follow up with a STD test, which can be done before the day of your IUD insertion, but may also be done at the office that same day. Having an IUD placed when you have an untreated STD can result in a higher risk of Pelvic Inflammatory Disease, which could cause infertility down the road.

Once you have concluded with these tests, the doctor will then check for tenderness in your uterus in a fairly similar way to a gynecologist exam. The doctor will then use a series of medical instruments to hold your cervix open and measure it to make sure the IUD is inserted to the correct depth. This will be very uncomfortable but should not be painful. Make sure to let your doctor know what you are feeling so they can identify any issues. Once the doctor has inserted the IUD, he or she will remove any insertion instruments and discuss aftercare. This entire procedure will take at most three minutes from start to finish, so there is no worry of sitting uncomfortably for long periods of time.
After Your IUD Insertion
Many women have reported having some dizziness the day of the procedure, but very light dizziness in most cases. This is the hormones or copper entering your system and beginning to work. You may also feel cramps, which can vary in severity, depending on the woman. Pain relievers can help to reduce these cramps, but taking a rest and relaxing your body will help immensely. These are very normal reaction during the first 24 hours of having an IUD inserted as your body adjusts to the new chemical compounds associated with the IUD. Remember to always discuss any questions or concerns with your doctor before, during and after an IUD insertion.
