Seeking Treatment for Infertility
When a woman is not able to get pregnant, although trying for a year or more, she should begin to seriously consider seeing a doctor to get any needed treatment. It can be very frustrating to desperately try to have a child and experience only failure. However, once the proper diagnosis is accomplished, it is often found that treatment will be successful and she will be able to finally conceive.

Age and Infertility
Women under age 35 should at least try for one year to get pregnant. This means regular and unprotected sex. For those aged 35 and older, after six months of trying, it is time to see a physician for tests. However, according to some studies, a large percentage of women who attempted to conceive and who were not able to in one year became pregnant within two years.
Infertility Testing
When a woman and her partner go for infertility testing, the doctor will ask for a complete medical history for both. Both will also receive a physical exam. For the female blood tests may also be done to check her hormone levels. She will be asked to take her temperature the first thing after she rises in the morning to determine if the eggs are being released from the ovaries properly.

One test is called the luteinizing hormone urine test. This test is for home use and measures a hormone produced by the pituitary gland. The amount of this hormone increases just before the woman ovulates and can determine when she is most fertile. A woman increases her chances of becoming pregnant if she has sex about every three days before and during her ovulation.
Another test is the FSH and clomid challenge test which is a blood test that reveals the health of the woman’s ovaries and how many eggs they contain. A radiologic procedure called a hysterosalpingography may be done to find out the shape of the uterus and how expanded or unobstructed the fallopian tubes are.
Other tests include:
• An ultrasound of the pelvic area
• Laparoscopy
• Thyroid function tests
Treatment for Infertility
Depending on what cause was found for the infertility, treatment can begin. There are both medical treatments, some using drugs, and alternative treatments which are more natural. Education goes a long way in alleviating a woman’s fears, although counseling is sometimes needed to calm both partners.

Some other methods of treatment that may be used include the following:
• An at-home conception kit – a cervical cap is used to place the semen near the opening of the cervix to aid in conception. This is not commonly used.
• Surgery to repair damage to reproductive organs
• Fertility medication
• In vitro fertilization
